The Great Sphinx and the pyramids of Giza are now the target of a radical Salafist jihadist leader.

Murgan Salem al-Gohary, 50, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, told Egyptian media that the historical landmarks are 'idolatrous' and must be destroyed.

The threats are being taken seriously as ten years ago Gohary helped smash a pair of giant Buddha statues in Afghanistan.

My Comment: I posted this story a day or two ago .... and it still disturbs me. I know that these people are sick .... but what is really disturbing is the silence from the Egyptian government, silence from the Egyptian President, and the realization that this Islamist leader enjoys a great deal of support in the Islamic world.

An Egyptian jihad leader, with self-professed links to the Taliban, called for the “destruction of the Sphinx and the Giza Pyramids in Egypt,” drawing ties between the Egyptian relics and Buddha statues, local media reported this week.

Murgan Salem al-Gohary, an Islamist leader twice-sentenced under former President Hosni Mubarak for advocating violence, called on Muslims to remove such “idols.”

“All Muslims are charged with applying the teachings of Islam to remove such idols, as we did in Afghanistan when we destroyed the Buddha statues,” he said on Saturday during a television interview on an Egyptian private channel, widely watched by Egyptian and Arab audiences.

My Comment: Will there come a day when radical Islamists will use explosives to destroy the sphinx, the pyramids, etc.... I hope not. But .... they have a history of doing just that.

My Comment: Others disagree with this observation. But I do concur with U.S. concerns that arming Islamic groups in Syria's civil war can result in having those same weapons aimed at us. We have seen that in Afghanistan, Yemen, and now Libya.

Colonel’s Class On Radical Islam Leaves Career In Limbo -- Washington Times

When ArmyLt. Col. Matthew Dooley last year began teaching a class to fellow officers on the dangers of radical Islam, he seemed to have landed in a perfect spot.

A highly rated armor officer who saw combat in Iraq, Col. Dooley planned to instruct for several years at the Joint Forces Staff College within the National Defense University, then seek command of a combat battalion — a ticket to better postings and higher rank.

Today, Col. Dooley finds himself at a dead end while being targeted for criticism by American Islamic groups, at least two of which are linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, which advocates universal Islamic law.

More important, Col. Dooley’s critics include ArmyGen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
